Make AI literacy a foundational element of your course design

At our university, effective AI literacy involves preparing faculty and students to critically engage with the tools, while exploring how it can support teaching, learning, research and the future workforce in meaningful ways. Students can now access information almost instantly because the technology summarises readings, brainstorms ideas and answers intricate questions in just seconds.

That changes the role of the instructor. Course design must go beyond delivering content and extend into designing learning experiences that prioritise critical thinking and problem-solving.  

One important lesson we have learned is that integrating AI tools should revolve around an instructor’s clear and methodical lesson objectives. They should be secondary to overall classroom goals. Although it’s tempting to introduce AI simply because it is new, students can immediately recognise when a tool feels forced on them or disconnected from course goals. Instead, focus on ways AI can support the goals already established for their course, rather than building entirely new AI-centric objectives.

Integrating AI through small steps 

Instructors who feel intimidated by AI do not need to redesign a course overnight. A single activity can be enough to start building AI literacy in a meaningful way.  

Ask students to use AI for brainstorming and then evaluate and critique the prompts used and the quality of ideas generated. Another tactic is having students compare their own interpretations of an assigned reading with an AI-generated summary. This keeps the focus on critical thinking rather than the AI output itself and helps demystify AI tools for students, who might arrive in the classroom with misconceptions or biases.

Some students assume AI only means ChatGPT. Others view it as a cheating tool. Creating space early in the semester to discuss what AI is, how it works and some of its ethical concerns helps establish a stronger foundation for AI-integrated learning. Understanding students’ perceptions through surveys or class discussions also helps instructors redesign activities in ways that directly address fears and uncertainty.  

The power of intent and direction  

As instructors, we have found that students respond more positively when expectations are clear. Rather than banning or ignoring AI, we define where AI can support learning and where critical thinking is still essential. Requiring students to explain how they used AI for assignments, and to evaluate the quality of outputs, makes it harder to rely on AI passively.  

Being intentional becomes especially important in disciplines where students feel threatened by AI. In digital arts and media courses, for example, students often worry that AI will diminish the originality behind their work or replace creativity altogether. These are real concerns and deserve thoughtful discussion.  

But AI can also create opportunities for students to focus more closely on human-centred skills that matter most, such as storytelling, communication, creative direction and problem-solving.  

AI for reinforcement, not replacement  

In some cases, AI removes logistical barriers that distract students from learning objectives. A student in an online film course might lack access to actors, crew members or studio equipment but AI tools can help simulate those components so the student can still gain experience and practise core skills such as art direction and communication.  

One principle remains applicable across all disciplines: AI works best when treated as a collaborative tool rather than a shortcut. In engineering courses, students could use AI to understand user needs by creating consumer personas and using an AI platform to figure out solutions tailored to each persona.  

In large online courses, AI-supported discussion tools such as Perusall help create more natural, collaborative interactions between students, instead of transactional discussion board posts. Online students have an informal environment in which to discuss course content, increasing engagement and content retention. Across every context, the goal is to use AI to deepen engagement, not replace it.  

As AI continues to evolve, educators do not need to become experts init. But we do need a working understanding of it, and a willingness to experiment.  

AI literacy is no longer separate from course design. It is increasingly becoming a foundational element for how we prepare students to think critically, work ethically and navigate a rapidly changing world.
